Registration : 
Every foreigner entering India on a Employment, Student, Research and Medical visa are required to register with the concerned FRRO, FRO within 14 days of their arrival if their visas are valid for more than 180 days. Registration also required in case of visa is less than 180 days and if there is special endorsement “for registration required”. However foreigners entering on Entry(X) and Business visas valid for more than 180 days are required to register with the FRRO, FRO if they continuously intend to stay for more than 6 months i.e. more than 180 days on each visit. (but exempting visa bearing endorsement as “Stay not to exceed 180days hence no registration required.) Afghan nationals have to report their arrival within 7days of entry in India.

Apart from the above, foreigners entering on Tourist, Journalist and any other category of visa which is valid for more than 180 days and do not have a special endorsement of “Each stay 180 days hence no registration required” are required to register with the concerned F.R.R.O.'s, F.R.O.s within 180 days of their arrival. Foreigners (including minors) have to report in person for Registration.

Although, Registration process is expected to be completed on same day, it may vary in those cases where field enquiry / other checks are required.

The above guidelines are valid for all cases except those where visa has special endorsement regarding registration.

The following documents are required for Registration - 

a) Original valid Passport and Visa.
b) Registration form (to be filled on computer terminals at F.R.R.O. office)
c) 3 Passport copies (photo page, Page indicating validity, Page bearing arrival stamp of Indian Immigration.
d) Undertaking letter (3 copies signed by Indian person and Indian Guarantors passport) format is given below at serial no. ‘i’
e) Residential proof (3 copies Electric bill / Telephone bill or Leave & Licence agreement.) Subject to satisfaction of the registering authority regarding genuineness of document.
f) The copy of the intimation to the local Police Station, if the applicant is residing in private House/Flat in a Building/Society/as a Tenant/ Paying Guest.)
g) 4 Passport size photographs (4cm × 4cm with clear background, ears distinctly visible, without spectacles and cap)
h) Registration fee – Rs.100/-.
i) Apart from the above documents additional supportive documents can be asked for in certain cases.
